In brightest day, in blackest night. DC Studios and HBO Max have released the long-awaited teaser for their superhero detective-drama television series, Lanterns, set to a remix of Bruce Springsteen’s “State Trooper.”
The track is featured on Springsteen’s timeless 1982 album, Nebraska, which inspired the 2025 biographical film, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.
The series follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they arrive in Nebraska to investigate a murder that will lead to the unraveling of a dark mystery that plays a pivotal role in the DC Universe (DCU) at large.
A slight departure from the Green Lantern lore in comics, the series takes cues from HBO’s True Detective and follows a grittier, more grounded path, offering a variety of tones compared to James Gunn’s Superman and Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl.
The teaser features glimpses of the iconic Green Lantern power ring, battery, and suit. However, the series puts an emphasis on Jordan and Stewart’s dynamic of being the teacher and the student, respectively.
The first season also stars Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and Nathan Fillion returning as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, who appeared in Superman and the second season of Peacemaker.
Lanterns is co-created by Chris Mundy (True Detective, Ozark) and Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen), along with comic book writer Tom King (Mister Miracle, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow).

The eight-episode first season of Lanterns premieres in August 2026 on HBO Max.
