Ariana Grande is officially an Oscar nominee.
The beloved pop icon is nominated ‘Best Supporting Actress’ at the 97th Academy Awards for her performance as Glinda in Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster musical Wicked, which was also showered with nine other nominations. Almost immediately after the nominations were announced, Grande took to her social media accounts to share her excitement at the news, posting a childhood photo of herself dressed as The Wizard of Oz‘s Dorothy. Read her full statement below.
“picking my head up in between sobs to say thank you so much to @theacademy for this unfathomable recognition. i cannot stop crying, to no one’s surprise. i’m humbled and deeply honored to be in such brilliant company and sharing this with tiny ari who sat and studied Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow just before the big, beautiful bubble entered. i’m so proud of you, tiny. thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for this acknowledgement @theacademy.
thank you @jonmchu for taking this chance on me and for being the most unbelievably brilliant leader, human being, and most fierce friend. i am so deeply proud of my beautiful Wicked family. i am so proud of my Elphie, my sister, my dear @cynthiaerivo. your brilliance is never ending and you deserve every flower (tulip) in every garden. i love you unconditionally, always.
i don’t quite have all my words yet, i’m still trying to breathe. but thank you. oh my goodness, thank you. Universal, Marc, my family, my heart.
lemons and melons and pears, oh my.”
Among Wicked‘s ten nominations for the upcoming ceremony include nods for Cynthia Erivo for the Best Actress as Elphaba, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and the highly coveted Best Picture award.
Yet aside from Wicked, another musical also dominated this year’s list of nominees — Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez. The controversial French musical garnered a total of thirteen nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Karla Sofia Gascon, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song for “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.”
Other nominees for Best Original Song include Elton John and Brandi Carlile’s “Never Too Late” (from the documentary Never Too Late), Adrian Quesada and Abraham Alexander’s “Like a Bird” (from Best Picture nominee Sing Sing), as well as H.E.R. and Dianne Warren’s “The Journey” (for the Netflix film The Six Triple Eight).
Meanwhile, on the Best Original Score front, composers Clément Ducol & Camille were recognized for their work on Emilia Pérez, alongside Daniel Blumberg’s score for The Brutalist, Kris Bowers’ The Wild Robot, Volker Bertelmann’s Conclave, and John Powell & Stephen Schwartz’s new compositions for Wicked.
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), is scheduled to take place on March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
