Japanese Breakfast writes a dreamy new original song for A24’s upcoming star-studded romantic-comedy, Materalists, directed by Celine Song, who made her acclaimed feature debut with 2023’s Past Lives.
In the film, Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is an ambitious matchmaker whose business is sought-after by even New York City’s elites. When she attends a client’s wedding, she finds herself in a toxic love triangle, meeting her “perfect match” in one of the groom’s best men — millionaire Randy (Pedro Pascal) — and rekindling a past love with her waiter and struggling actor ex, Jason (Chris Evans).
In the trailer, we get to hear Japanese Breakfast’s original song being played. The band took to Instagram to sound off on the trailer’s release with the caption, “We interrupt regular album release week programming to share we composed a song for Celine Song’s new @a24 feature Materialists! You can hear some pieces of the track in the trailer that dropped today.”
The currently-unnamed track won’t be part of their fourth studio album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& Sad Women), and specifically made for the film.

This isn’t the first time Michelle Zauner and her band have crossed over to different art forms. In 2021, they composed the soundtrack for the Sable open-world exploration video game, which included the lead single, “Glider.”
On another note, Zauner and A24 go way back. She appeared on an episode of The A24 Podcast, in conversation with South Korean filmmaker, Kogonada, who made Columbus and the A24 science fiction drama After Yang.
