Like a lot of Filipino kids who grew up abroad, Olivia Rodrigo has never been to the Philippines. While she has always shared her admiration for her heritage and expressed wanting to visit soon, she has yet to make a trip down to this sunny cluster of islands — that is, until this coming October where she’s taking over the Philippine Arena for her highly sought-after GUTS World Tour.

The Filipino-American singer-songwriter is coming home, and like with any balikbayan, there needs to be a celebration. So, as Olivia gets ready for the Filipino crowd, Billboard Philippines has put together an itinerary of Metro Manila — inspired by her very own songs — that we’d love to take Olivia on.

While you can learn a lot about the Philippines online, there’s nothing like a complete deep dive into the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila that’ll give you that true Filipino experience — and we’re talking way beyond hailing down a jeepney, going to Jollibee, and trying adobo. From bar-hopping around Poblacion to thrifting in Makati Square, here’s what an unforgettable day around the city would look like.

“good 4 u”: Go Shopping At Makati Square

While it may look unassuming from the outside, Makati Square (formerly but still fondly known as Makati Cinema Square or MCS) is a treasure trove of art, books, vinyl records, and of course, ukay-ukay

A true haven for all artsy and musical kids in the Metro, the old time-y mall is packed with record stores and ukay-ukay shops (thrift shops) that offer all kinds of pieces at reasonable and affordable prices. So, Olivia, if you’re looking for a place that’s ‘good 4 ur’ heart and wallet, MCS is definitely a must-visit.

“bad idea right?”: Try Balut At Quiapo Market

There’s no better way to get to know a city than through its food, and in the case of Manila, its street food. While some treats are a no-brainer like lumpia (Filipino spring rolls), and sorbetes (ice cream), some dishes — admittedly like the infamous balut (duck embryo) — will have you asking, “It’s a bad idea, right?”

But fear not, a trip down Quiapo market — that has a myriad of delicious street food for your choosing — will always be worthwhile.

“brutal”: Get Stuck In Traffic At EDSA

Let’s face it, nothing screams a true Metro Manila experience than getting stuck in traffic on EDSA. Despite all that you might hear, Manila traffic is truly unlike anything else. In other words, it’s absolutely “brutal.”

And while no one sets out to get stuck in the middle of EDSA, you’ll end up there anyway — but hey, at least you’ll be putting your “drivers license” to use.

“deja vu”: Go Bar-hopping In Poblacion

For the unseasoned veteran, the streets of Poblacion, Makati are a confusing maze of dark alleyways where your best bet is to follow the faint thumping of music. You’ll end up crossing random streets, and walking through uneven pavements only to realize you’ve gone in a circle; maybe you’re having “deja vu,” or maybe you’re just lost.

But once you’ve eventually found your way, you’ll have the time of your life — whether it’s pregaming at the hidden Spirits Library, or chill drinking at Mono By Phono, or partying at Apotheka.

“obsessed”: Catch A Gig At Mow’s

There’s nothing like the thrill of live music, so what kind of hosts would we be if we didn’t bring Olivia to a gig? Whether it’s a tribute night or just a regular ol’ show, Mow’s is a staple venue to the local gig circuit that’s always brimming with charm and energy.

And surely, by the end of the night, she’ll be a little more “obsessed” with the Filipino music scene.

Olivia Rodrigo is set to take over Bulacan’s Philippine Arena as part of her GUTS World Tour this October 5, 2024.
