KZ Tandingan Is Showing How Far Filipino Creativity Can Go
From a provincial dream to stages and audiences beyond the Philippines, KZ Tandingan’s career shows how Filipino creativity can expand when talent is given the room, reach, and connection to grow.

Great talent has always existed in the Philippines; what has changed is how far it can travel.
For KZ Tandingan, the distance between where she started and where music has taken her is something she still finds surprising. Growing up in a province where opportunities in music were limited, she learned early on to treat a career in the industry as something that might not necessarily be possible. She auditioned for several competitions, including Pinoy Big Brother, Pilipinas Got Talent, and Pinoy Dream Academy, but never made it past the pre-audition stages.
When she auditioned for The X Factor Philippines, music was hardly at the top of her priorities. She was graduating and preparing to find a stable job, already familiar with the possibility of rejection. Still, she decided to give it one more shot, telling herself that if it did not work out this time, she would finally move on. That decision would eventually change the course of her career.
“Everything,” KZ says when asked what would surprise her younger self about where her music has taken her today. “I never thought this would really happen. Because I come from a province where these opportunities are very rare.” That first breakthrough opened the door, but it was KZ’s willingness to create more that carried her music further.
Finding New Ways To Tell The Same Story

One of the defining moments in KZ’s career came when she agreed to compete on Singer 2018, the Chinese singing competition that introduced her artistry to audiences well beyond the Philippines.
The experience also helped sharpen what she wanted her artistry to represent: taking familiar songs and finding new ways to tell their stories through her own perspective. “I take pride in not just covering a song,” she explains. “I take pride in telling the same story from a different angle every single time.” That instinct to reinterpret has since become central to her creative identity, giving listeners another way into songs they may already know while allowing KZ to bring her own sensibilities to an international audience.
She began to understand the reach of those performances in an unexpected place. During a trip to Paris after attending a wedding in Italy, KZ was approached by a group of strangers who asked for a photo. Assuming they wanted her to take their picture, she was surprised when they revealed that they recognized her from Singer 2018 and had even downloaded a playlist of her performances. It was one of the first times she encountered listeners outside the Philippines who knew her work firsthand, and the memory has stayed with her as a reminder of how music can travel across borders and find people far from where it was created.
Creative Connection Has No Borders
Collaboration has also become an important part of KZ’s creative life, particularly through her work with her husband and fellow artist TJ Monterde. A strong partnership, she says, starts with recognizing what each person brings into the room. KZ sees TJ as the stronger songwriter between them, while she takes the lead on vocal arrangement, giving them space to build on each other’s ideas. “You left your ego, your pride at the door before you came in,” she says, describing the trust required to let each artist contribute what they do best.
She sees that same exchange happening across Filipino music, where artists are increasingly moving between sounds, genres, and creative communities. “It’s so blurred,” she says of those boundaries. “If it sounds good, it sounds good.” That is part of what excites her about the current generation, where artists are willing to step outside their comfort zones, collaborate with people from different creative worlds, and explore ideas they may not have encountered otherwise. For KZ, that sense of possibility comes from the fact that “you never know what you’re gonna get,” giving Filipino music more opportunities to travel.
A New Chapter, Built Independently

Today, KZ is entering another period of expansion. Earlier this year, she and TJ Monterde brought their In Between concert to the Smart Araneta Coliseum for four sold-out nights from February 6 to 9, a milestone that was followed by international shows across the US and Canada. She has also continued releasing music throughout 2026, with singles including “Sinong Magmamahal Sa ‘Kin?,” “Hiraya Manawari,” “KAYA,” “Sumabay Ka,” and “Bugsay,” while taking on a new role as an independent artist.
With that independence comes a more hands-on role in the process of making and releasing music. KZ is now involved in the details behind her work, from the music itself to distribution and everything that comes with putting a release into the world. Her next goal is to release an entire EPEPShort for extended play, a collection of songs longer than a single but shorter than a full album, typically containing three to six tracks. Artists use EPs to introduce theirGo to EP Glossary independently, a milestone she sees as a new definition of reaching new heights. “If I’m able to release an entire EP independently, that would be considered the new heights,” she says.
The scale of KZ’s career has grown considerably since her first auditions, yet she continues to think about growth in more personal terms. She admits there have been periods when she felt stuck, pushing herself forward without seeing anything happen. A message she heard in church eventually gave her a different perspective on those periods, reminding her that “waiting is also part of growth.”
Connection Takes Creativity
KZ’s career shows how creative work can travel further when opportunities can connect across distance. Her music has taken her from local stages to international audiences, while collaborations have brought her into creative spaces with artists who bring different strengths and perspectives. Along the way, those experiences have widened the world around her music.
Reliable connectivity helps make those exchanges possible, giving creative work the infrastructure to move between people, places, and platforms. It is also at the heart of Xponentials, a nationwide cultural and digital campaign by Converge ICT Solutions that highlights inspiring Filipino achievers while expanding high-speed broadband infrastructure across the regions. The idea reflects a growing creative landscape where talent can reach further when the right connections are in place.
KZ knows that expansion firsthand. After repeated auditions and years of wondering if music could become a career, she eventually found herself performing for audiences abroad, collaborating with artists from different creative backgrounds, and building a new chapter independently. She hopes to release more music and work with both younger artists and established names, continuing to explore what she can create from here.
Her own experience shapes what she would tell the next generation of creatives. “Nothing is impossible,” she says. “I felt like all these things that I’m experiencing, all these blessings that I’m experiencing, I thought all of this was impossible. But if it is meant for you, it is meant for you.”
How Far Filipino Talent Can Go
From Davao to the world, KZ Tandingan’s story is one of a Filipino creative continuing to push beyond where she started. She is part of a wider group of Xponentials celebrated by Converge, alongside designer Kenneth Cobonpue and skateboarder Margielyn Didal, whose own paths from the Visayas and Mindanao have taken them to global stages. Together, their stories show how far Filipino talent can go.
The Xponentials campaign brings that idea closer to home through the Xponential Tour, connecting established artists with local performers and creators while Converge continues to expand its digital infrastructure across the regions. In Naga, where KZ headlined the tour, the platform brought music and community together while highlighting the possibilities that stronger connections can create for people pursuing their passions.
