The acclaimed Broadway musical Hamilton will debut on the big screen in Philippine cinemas for a limited one-week-only run starting October 1.
The 150-minute filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Grammy, Tony, and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, produced by Walt Disney Studios and also available on Disney+, coincides with the Broadway show’s 10th anniversary.
Hamilton: An American Musical first burst onto the scene when it premiered off-Broadway in early 2015. It is based on the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. The production follows the journey of Hamilton, an orphan and immigrant who rose to become one of America’s Founding Fathers. The musical focuses on his role in the Revolutionary War, his contributions to the U.S. Constitution and the nation’s financial system, and his personal and political conflicts.
The musical also explores themes of legacy, race, power, politics, revolution, and immigrant identity, with Miranda describing it as “America then, told by America now.” It is also celebrated for blending hip-hop, R&B, pop, and traditional Broadway styles in innovative ways. It also features a racially diverse cast portraying white historical figures—unprecedented in Broadway’s retelling of America’s founding era.
For the first time, Filipino audiences can watch the original Broadway staging with its full cast on the big screen.
