Finneas has released the music video for “2001,” which pays homage to director Stanley Kubrick‘s influential 1968 epic science fiction film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In the music video directed by his longtime partner, Claudia Sulewski, Finneas plays “an actor hopelessly in love with his director, who couldn’t care less and is only focused on making a great film,” says Sulewski in a press release. The director, played by Kate Hudson (Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), can be seen being chased by Finneas as he tries to earn her love and attention.

“When I first started conceptualizing this music video, I knew I wanted to pay homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey, with nods to some of the film’s most iconic set ups like the fisheye lens and the upside-down sequence,” Sulewski adds.

The outer-space themed visuals gravitate towards the song’s chorus, with Finneas singing, “Honey, what you runnin’ from? When you comin’ back to bed? Toss and turn it all night long with me instead. Honey, what you runnin’ from? Where the hell are you headed to? Do you like the way I run after you?

“2001” serves as the fifth track of the Grammy-winning record producer’s second studio album, For Cryin’ Out Loud, released last Octoebr 2024. It also included the singles: “For Cryin’ Out Loud!,” “Cleats,” and “Lotus Eater.”
