The Japan Culture and Entertainment Industry Promotion Association (CEIPA) has recently announced the launch of MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN — a new major event set to be the country’s largest music awards show.

Taking place at Kyoto’s Rohm Theatre on May 22, 2025, the inaugural ceremony promises to spotlight Japan’s most popular musical acts alongside standout international artists. With more than 60 award categories, MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN will feature six primary honors, including Song of the Year and Artist of the Year, celebrating works and artists that made waves from January 2024 through January 2025.

Utilizing Billboard Japan’s data alongside other metrics, candidates will be auto-selected for each category, narrowing to five nominees through an intensive domestic voting process. Winners will be chosen by a mix of domestic and international voting members. Categories span genres like J-pop, hip-hop, and idol culture, alongside specialized categories for dance, music videos, Vocaloid culture, and DJing. The awards will also feature regional categories, such as Best Song Asia — ensuring global representation at the ceremony.

Over 5,000 voting members from various corners of the music industry — including artists, managers, engineers, promoters, music video directors, media figures, and critics — will participate in the selection process. General music fans will also have the opportunity to vote in select categories, adding a public dimension to the event’s inclusivity.

“Entertainment has transformed in the post-COVID world, and with digitalization, Japanese music now reaches audiences worldwide,” mentions Shunsuke Muramatsu, CEIPA’s Chair of the Board. “We’re excited to support emerging talent through an awards show that connects Japan with the global stage.”

Supported by Japan’s major music organizations, including the Recording Industry Association of Japan and the Federation of Music Producers Japan, the event aims to “connect with the world and light the future of music.” CEIPA’s board member Tatsuya Nomura, highlighting the event’s international reach, explained, “Our goal is to amplify Japanese music beyond national borders.” MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN will be broadcast live on Japanese terrestrial TV and streamed globally on YouTube, with additional promotional efforts planned in Asian markets and beyond.

The week leading up to the awards will feature MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN Week, which includes industry seminars and showcases spotlighting local and international talent. This initiative aims to foster dialogue within the industry, expanding Japanese music’s global footprint and supporting artists who are finding success on the world stage.
